How difficult are the run-ins?
By: Matt P | February 14th, 2008Chris Kamara over at Sky Sports thinks that Bristol are one of five teams in with a chance of automatic promotion. I’d probably agree with his view that all of the top five teams in the Championship have a chance, and that Ipswich, in sixth, may have a little too much to do.
I thought it would be an interesting idea, in order to gauge how difficult each team’s run in is, to draw up a final league table by copying the results from earlier in the season against those teams each club still has to play. So, for example, Bristol, who lost 2v0 against Crystal Palace in January, get 0 points for the corresponding fixture in their run-in. There - I hope that makes sense!
The resulting table looks like this
Pstn / Points Now / Points Gained in Run-In / Final Points Total
1st / West Bromwich Albion / 55 / 28 / 83
2nd / Stoke City / 56 / 25 / 81
3rd / Bristol City / 57 / 23 / 80
4th / Watford / 58 / 18 / 76
5th / Charlton / 51 / 18 / 69
Of course, none of this takes into account home or away, or indeed form. In that sense it’s rubbish, but in a different sense it provides an additional discussion point in trying to predict who will go up automatically.

The Watford stat is interesting … they have a tough run coming up, it seems, at least in terms of past results against those sides. Bristol may be able to take advantage and grab not only promotion, but a trophy as well.
